The House voted 257-25 to impeach Vice President Sara Duterte over alleged misuse of funds and a kill remark. Her brother hopes the Senate trial reveals the truth.
The impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte opened Monday in the Philippine Senate. Her brother, Davao City Rep. Paolo "Pulong" Duterte, said he hopes the process will finally reveal the truth.
"I hope this process finally allows the truth to emerge from the mountain of accusations, speculation, political narratives, and noise that have surrounded this issue for months," the lawmaker said in a statement.
Pulong Duterte, the eldest son of former President Rodrigo Duterte, said his sister is ready to face the charges. "Vice President Sara Duterte has made it clear that she is prepared to face the charges against her. We are confident that she will be given the opportunity to answer every allegation in the proper forum and under the proper process," he said.
He urged the public to let the Senate impeachment court do its work. "I ask everyone to allow the Senate impeachment court to do its work and to approach this historic process with an open mind," he said.
The House of Representatives voted 257-25, with nine abstentions, to impeach Duterte on May 11, 2026. The articles of impeachment accuse her of misuse of confidential funds, accumulation of unexplained wealth, bribery, and a kill remark against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. The House Committee on Justice found probable cause on April 29, 2026, after hearing two impeachment complaints. Duterte has denied all allegations.
The Senate is now sitting as an impeachment court. Under Philippine law, a conviction requires a two-thirds vote of all 24 senators. The trial is expected to last several weeks.
The impeachment is the latest chapter in the rift between the Duterte and Marcos families, who ran together in the 2022 elections under a unity ticket. The kill remark, which Duterte allegedly made against Marcos, escalated tensions. She has said the remark was taken out of context.
Pulong Duterte's statement did not address the specific charges. He focused on the process and the need for the truth to come out.
The trial began with the Senate's organizational session. Senators will act as judges. The House prosecution team will present its case, followed by the defense. No date has been set for a verdict.
This is the first impeachment trial of a sitting vice president in Philippine history. The outcome could reshape the political landscape ahead of the 2028 presidential election, in which Sara Duterte is a potential candidate. The trial also tests the independence of the Senate, which includes allies of both the Marcos and Duterte camps.
Pulong Duterte's call for an open mind reflects the high stakes. The process will determine not only Sara Duterte's political future but also the stability of the current administration.
