The Major Cities Chiefs Association endorsed the latest CLARITY Act draft, citing improved financial crime provisions. The bill faces a tight timeline before the August recess.
The Major Cities Chiefs Association threw its weight behind the CLARITY Act on Thursday, adding a new law enforcement voice to the push for passage before the August recess. The nonprofit, which represents police chiefs from the largest U.S. cities, said in a letter that the latest version of the bill addresses financial crime concerns that had earlier held back its support.
“The most recent changes to the legislation have earned MCCA’s support,” the letter reads. “Critically, the bill now includes a new title with additional law enforcement provisions.” The group called the update “a meaningful step toward improving the ability of law enforcement to investigate financial crimes involving digital assets.”
The endorsement follows a similar move last week from the National Fraternal Order of Police. Democratic Senator Catherine Cortez Masto also sent suggested changes to the bill this week, working with two law enforcement groups that she said felt “good” about the latest draft.
Lawmakers are racing to get the CLARITY Act passed before Congress leaves for August recess. The bill cleared the House with strong bipartisan support last year but has been stalled in the Senate for much of 2026. Banking industry groups raised concerns over stablecoin yield provisions, and some lawmakers pushed for stronger ethics rules.
An updated version of the bill introduced last week directly addressed one of those ethics gaps: it bans government officials and their families from issuing or promoting crypto. The provision comes amid criticism of President Trump’s crypto business interests, with some lawmakers alleging conflicts of interest tied to his family’s involvement in meme coins and the decentralized finance protocol World Liberty Financial.
Not everyone is on board. A group of Democrats said last week that the current version falls short of what is needed. The bill’s supporters are hoping to win enough bipartisan backing in the coming days to push the legislation forward. The CLARITY Act aims to create a federal regulatory framework for digital assets, a goal that has eluded Congress for years.
