Carlos Miguens, former chairman of Patagonia Gold, died July 18. CEO Christopher van Tienhoven said his vision was key to the Calcatreu project. The family remains a long-term shareholder.
Patagonia Gold Corp. said former Chairman Carlos J. Miguens died July 18. Miguens was a cornerstone of the company's growth and helped advance its flagship Calcatreu project in Argentina, the company said in a statement.
Miguens served as chairman from July 2019, when Patagonia shares began trading on the TSX Venture Exchange, to October 2022. He provided strategic vision and disciplined capital oversight, the company said.
CEO Christopher van Tienhoven credited Miguens with building the company's foundation. "His commitment to the Company was critical to building the strong foundation we have today and his contributions will have a lasting influence on our organization," van Tienhoven said in the statement. He added that Miguens' support enabled the Calcatreu project and positioned the company for future growth.
The Miguens family said it will remain a long-term shareholder and continue supporting mining development in Argentina through Patagonia's portfolio. The shareholdings will transition to his heirs under estate arrangements, the company said.
Patagonia holds mineral rights to more than 375 properties in Argentina and is one of the largest landholders in Santa Cruz province. The company's main assets are the Calcatreu project in Rio Negro and the Cap-Oeste underground project. Its focus is on gold and silver projects in the Patagonia region.
The company said it will continue to advance its portfolio with a focus on disciplined project development and operational execution. For broader context on commodities markets, the passing of a key figure at a junior miner highlights the personal element behind mining project development.
