Orpheus Uranium (ASX: ORP) has started its first drilling program at the Frome Project in South Australia. The rotary mud rig is on site, the company said Thursday. The campaign will run up to 35 holes for about 5,750 metres, targeting a 12km-long interpreted uranium-bearing palaeochannel system at the Erudina prospect.
Early holes will test the broader stratigraphic and oxidation-reduction framework. Orpheus will use the results to sharpen locations for later drilling. The initial six to eight holes are designed to calibrate the company's quasi-regional interpretation of the area, managing director Clinton Dubieniecki said.
“The commencement of drilling at the Frome project will be a major step for the Orpheus team,” Dubieniecki said in a statement. “We have invested significant effort to reach this point, and I’m excited to finally test both the Erudina prospect–a very compelling uranium target–and the geological model we have developed.”
Historical drilling at Erudina recorded uranium anomalism above 100ppm equivalent uranium oxide across 64 holes. Orpheus reinterpreted that data, along with stratigraphy and palaeochannel architecture, and identified multiple laterally and vertically developed oxidation-reduction boundaries. Those boundaries may represent stacked uranium mineralising positions, the company said. The new program aims to confirm and refine those earlier results, improve understanding of the palaeochannel architecture, and test continuity along interpreted mineralised trends.
Erudina sits in the Callabonna Sub-Basin, where the target geology is the Eyre Formation. The sub-basin hosts several sediment-hosted uranium deposits, including Four Mile, Honeymoon and Goulds Dam. Boss Energy (ASX: BOE) reports a combined Indicated and Inferred resource of 33.1 million pounds of uranium oxide at Goulds Dam, averaging 388ppm. Orpheus said the geological similarities with nearby uranium systems support the prospectivity of the broader Frome project.
Results from the campaign will feed into the company's geological model and support a staged evaluation toward a potential Exploration Target and possible mineral resource estimate (MRE). The program can be adjusted or extended as results come in. The company plans to use the data to guide future exploration across Erudina and the wider tenure.
