OpenAI launched Astra for Law, an AI foundation tailored for law firms and legal technology companies, the company said in a Thursday blog post.

The product combines OpenAI's latest model, GPT-6 Astra, with settings and tools designed for professional legal work. OpenAI also added 26 ecosystem plugins that connect ChatGPT to specialized tools law firms use, letting users customize Astra for Law.

Astra for Law was 40% more accurate in providing research answers than GPT-6 Astra using web search alone, the company said. It also found 24% more reference cases and retrieved 54% more relevant passages from the correct court opinions, according to the post.

OpenAI will initially offer Astra for Law to selected law firms through its Trusted Access program in ChatGPT and Codex. The company plans to add the product to its API soon.

“OpenAI is investing in law for the long term,” the company said in the post. “We’ll keep advancing Astra for Law’s model, settings, tools and instructions together, guided by rigorous evaluations and feedback from lawyers and legal technology partners.”

Legal tech startups raised over $2.4 billion in the first nine months of 2025, according to earlier reports. A PYMNTS report from October 2025 said AI was becoming embedded infrastructure in law firms, handling research, contracting, compliance and billing.

Rival Anthropic announced in May that it added tools for the legal industry, including more than 20 Model Context Protocol connectors linking Claude to legal software, and 12 plugins for specific practice areas. Anthropic said at the time that legal professionals had become the most engaged users of its Claude Cowork product among any knowledge-work function.

OpenAI's Astra for Law and Anthropic's legal tools now compete for the same law firm customers, as both companies target a sector that has shown strong demand for AI assistance in research, drafting and compliance.

OpenAI plans to add Astra for Law to its API in the coming weeks, according to the post.
