OpenAI will launch advertising on its ChatGPT platform in India, targeting logged-in adult users on the Free and Go tiers, the company said Tuesday. The rollout, handled through WPP and Omnicom media agencies, precedes the company's planned public listing later this year.
More than 50 brands are set to advertise from this week, according to OpenAI. Self-serve access to the ChatGPT Ads Manager will open in India on September 4, with daily budgets starting at ₹725.
"India is one of the most dynamic markets in the world for how people use ChatGPT to learn, build, and discover," said Dave Dugan, vice president and head of global ads solutions at OpenAI. "Our weekly active users have doubled year-on-year, with many of them going beyond simple searches and changing how they make decisions."
India is among ChatGPT's largest and most active markets, Dugan said.
The ads appear below a ChatGPT response when a relevant sponsored product or service is available. OpenAI said the ads will be clearly separated from the AI response. Ads will not appear on accounts of users who are identified as, or predicted to be, under 18. They will also be blocked alongside sensitive topics such as mental health and politics, the company said.
Premium tiers, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education, remain ad-free.
Advertisers will receive aggregate campaign data, including impressions and clicks, but no access to individual conversations, OpenAI said. Partner agencies connect more than 50 brands. OpenAI said it will work with other agencies under a non-exclusive model.
The ads will not influence ChatGPT's responses, the company said. Users can dismiss ads, provide feedback, see why an ad was shown, manage personalisation and clear data used for advertising.
