NTPC's board approved the ₹20,456.7 crore Lara Stage-III (2x800 MW) project on July 11. The company also recently sought bids to improve sub-critical unit flexibility for renewable integration.
NTPC's board approved a ₹20,456.7 crore investment for the 1,600 MW Lara Super Thermal Power Project Stage-III in Chhattisgarh, the company said in an exchange filing on Saturday.
The Board of Directors of NTPC Limited in its meeting held today, i.e. 11th July 2026 has, inter-alia, approved investment proposal for Lara Super Thermal Power Project, Stage-III (2x800 MW) at current estimated cost of Rs 20,456.70 crore.
NTPC said the project will add two 800 MW units to the Lara complex.
On June 5, the company sought bids from technology providers to help its sub-critical thermal units operate at lower loads. The goal is to make those units flexible enough to support grid balancing as renewable energy penetration grows.
Sub-critical thermal units can offer greater flexibility than supercritical and ultra-supercritical technologies because of less parameter swings and lower fatigue, NTPC said. Their ability to run efficiently at lower loads and adapt to frequent cycling makes them a potential enabler for higher renewable energy integration, the company added.
