National Commission for Women chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar on Thursday said the commission has set a target of eliminating child marriage across India by 2030, with an interim goal of cutting the rate by 10% within this year.
Speaking at a press conference, Rahatkar said the commission aims to reduce child marriage to zero by 2030 nationwide. The 10% reduction by 2026 is a milestone toward that goal, she said.
"We have set a target to reduce child marriage to zero by 2030 across the nation and achieve a 10 per cent reduction by 2026 to meet the main target," she said.
The national average for child marriage stands at 23.3%, officials said. Three states – West Bengal, Bihar and Tripura – report rates above 40%, meaning more than four in 10 women there are married before turning 18.
Rahatkar arrived in Tripura on Tuesday for a series of meetings and awareness programs on girl trafficking, child marriage, the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, and women's welfare. She met Chief Secretary JK Sinha and Special Secretary of Social Education and Social Welfare Tapan Kumar Das at the state guest house to discuss state government initiatives for women.
She described Tripura as a border state vulnerable to trafficking and held a separate meeting with Border Security Force officials to discuss ways to sensitize personnel on preventing cross-border trafficking.
Rahatkar called child marriage a serious concern and said government agencies are working relentlessly on the issue in the state. She also praised women-led self-help groups, noting that she met Lakhpati Didis and SHG members in Udaipur, Gomati district, on Wednesday.
"I met Lakhpati Didis and members of SHGs in Udaipur in Gomati district on Wednesday and was impressed by their growing sustainable income generation," she said.
On Tuesday, Rahatkar met Chief Minister Manik Saha and discussed women's empowerment, welfare and safety.
