Natural Gas Stuck Between Key Averages as Demand Fades

Natural gas futures drifted through Friday's session, caught between the 50-day and 200-day exponential moving averages with no catalyst to break the range. The front-month contract hovered near $3, a level where options barriers cluster, traders said.

The market has been chopping sideways all week. Thursday's sell-off followed a larger-than-expected storage build from the Energy Information Administration, which reinforced the bearish supply picture. Inventories came in above consensus, the EIA reported, adding to the weight on prices.

Demand is the problem. Temperatures across the U.S. have turned milder, cutting both cooling and heating loads. This is the shoulder season – spring – when weather-driven consumption hits its annual low. European buying, which typically picks up later in the year as the region refills storage, has not yet materialized at scale. Without a demand catalyst, the supply overhang keeps prices pinned.

The 50-day EMA sits below current levels, the 200-day EMA above. That compression zone, combined with the $3 psychological handle, has created a low-volatility environment that favors short-term scalpers over trend traders. A break above the 200-day would require a weather shift or a supply disruption; a break below the 50-day would open a test of the February lows near $2.80.

For now, the market is waiting. The next scheduled data point is Thursday's EIA storage report. Until then, expect more of the same: tight ranges, low conviction, and headline risk from the Middle East over the weekend.
