Montek Singh Ahluwalia's Revenue Augmentation Committee heard from 10 Tamil Nadu departments on tax collection gaps and IT use, then briefed CM Vijay on its proposed course of action.
Tamil Nadu's Revenue Augmentation Committee, chaired by former Planning Commission deputy chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia, held its first in-person meeting Thursday at the Chennai Metro Rail Ltd building. The panel heard detailed presentations from the state's major revenue-generating departments, including Commercial Taxes, Registration, Prohibition and Excise, TASMAC, Transport, Geology and Mining, and the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority.
The committee was set up to recommend ways to sustainably increase the state's own tax and non-tax revenues. At the meeting, the panel discussed the scope of its study, the timeline for its report, and plans for future consultations.
"Each department placed before the Committee the structure and administration of its revenue head, including the use of information technology, the trend in collection, the buoyancy of the head, the longstanding challenges including leakages, evasion, administrative bottlenecks, the gap between potential and actual revenue, a comparison with the practices in other States, and the possible next steps for revenue augmentation in the short, medium and long term," the state Finance department said in a statement.
Ahluwalia and other committee members later met Chief Minister Joseph Vijay and Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu at the Secretariat to brief them on the proposed course of action.
The committee had earlier invited public suggestions via email and has taken note of the responses received, according to the Finance department.
