PM Modi urged G7 leaders to protect seafarers and secure sea lanes after three Indians died in a US strike. The Strait of Hormuz is at the center of trade disruption risk.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Tuesday for guaranteed safety of seafarers and secure shipping lanes, speaking at the G7 Outreach Session in Evian, France. The appeal came days after a US military strike in the Gulf of Oman killed three Indian mariners on a merchant vessel.
The strike, which India confirmed had killed its nationals, has intensified domestic scrutiny over maritime security in a region already strained by Houthi attacks and broader West Asian tensions. Modi told leaders including US President Donald Trump that seafarers must be able to work without fear and that sea routes must stay open.
“Disruptions to maritime trade in the Strait of Hormuz have hit the global economy,” Modi said, according to a transcript of his remarks. The strait is a key chokepoint for crude shipments. Any sustained closure would feed directly into oil and shipping costs.
Modi stressed that long-term solutions require dialogue and trust. “Partnerships succeed only when trust lies at their core,” he said. He added that technology and supply chains should be used for the global good, not as weapons. India stands ready to work with partners on maritime security, the prime minister said.
Modi also called for trust in global systems and institutions. “The trust that technology and supply chains will be used for the global good, rather than as weapons. The trust that development opportunities will not be limited to just a few countries,” he said. He shared India’s “humanity first” principle and said development is most effective when aligned with people’s aspirations.
He welcomed progress in West Asia peace efforts. “This conflict has caused loss of life and property in our friendly countries,” Modi said.
The incident adds a fresh layer of uncertainty to a region where shipping risk is already elevated. No concrete diplomatic steps have been disclosed. Modi’s appearance marked India’s 13th participation as a guest country at the G7 Summit.
