Mitch McConnell Reveals Fall Caused Hospitalization, Breaks Weeks of Speculation

Sen. Mitch McConnell said Sunday that a fall led to his hospitalization last month, his first public account of the episode after weeks of silence. The Kentucky Republican, 84, said in a statement that doctors are still testing him to determine what caused the fall. He acknowledged the long quiet about his condition by saying folks of his generation often hesitate to share the vulnerability that comes with aging. McConnell said he is in a rehabilitation center and will not return to the Senate quite yet. He continues to work with his staff on Senate business. The statement included a photo of the senator with his wife Elaine Chao, a tacit response to online rumors that he had died or was incapacitated. McConnell was hospitalized June 14. His office had provided few details, saying only that he was receiving excellent care. The lack of information fueled speculation, and Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear of Kentucky publicly urged McConnell to update the public on his health.
