Mercer International reported a second-quarter Operating EBITDA of negative $21 million, nearly unchanged from the same period last year but down from positive $7.8 million in the first quarter. The pulp producer also posted a net loss of $76 million, or $1.13 a share, compared with a loss of $86.1 million a year earlier.
The company took a $29 million non-cash impairment charge against pulp and fiber inventory. Chief Executive Juan Carlos Bueno said pulp sales realizations stayed steady but that rising European fiber costs, driven by regional supply shortages and competition for sawmill residuals from energy producers, weighed on results.
Mercer has formed a special committee of independent directors to review strategic alternatives and improve its capital structure. It has hired advisors to assist with the review and broader financing initiatives.
As part of that process, the company has entered discussions with holders of its 2028 and 2029 senior notes and other stakeholders about potential financing. Bueno said no agreement has been reached with any group and there is no assurance the talks will lead to a transaction.
Mercer is also pursuing a cost-saving program called "One Goal One Hundred," targeting $100 million in savings and operational efficiencies by year end. The company realized $13 million in savings in the second quarter, bringing the total to about $54 million since the program launched in April 2025.
The company has been working to reduce capital expenditures and preserve cash. The next catalyst will be any update from the strategic review or the debt discussions, both of which remain ongoing.
