MDA Space will buy Blue Canyon Technologies, the small-satellite manufacturing unit of RTX Corp., for $620 million in cash. The deal, financed with secured debt, is expected to close later this year.
The acquisition gives the Canadian space company a manufacturing base in Colorado, home to NORAD, United States Space Command, and Space Force Operations Command. Blue Canyon currently employs more than 400 people across two facilities in the state. Colorado has over 2,000 aerospace businesses employing roughly 55,000 people, according to the state's economic development office.
Mike Greenley, MDA Space CEO, said the deal accelerates the company's US growth strategy by adding local manufacturing and a skilled workforce. MDA recently expanded its Montreal satellite factory to chase demand for constellation contracts. When it listed on the New York Stock Exchange in March, it raised about $300 million for acquisitions.
The simple read is that MDA is buying revenue and headcount. The better read involves strategic positioning. The US government is increasing spending on small satellite constellations for communications and surveillance. Blue Canyon's existing contracts and relationships give MDA a jump on those opportunities.
RTX, which is selling the unit, has an Alpha Score of 54 out of 100 from AlphaScala, placing it in the 'Mixed' category within the Industrials sector. The divestiture lets RTX focus on its core defense products while MDA gains a foothold in the satellite-manufacturing supply chain.
The deal's payoff hinges on winning new US government contracts and integrating the Colorado facilities. Risks include a shift in defense priorities and integration delays. The company added that Blue Canyon is currently profitable and contributes $3.5 billion to its sales pipeline.
MDA Space already operates US offices in Texas and Pennsylvania. The addition of Colorado operations gives it a direct line to the country's space command customers.
