McConnell Says Fall Caused Hospitalization, Won't Return to Senate Yet

McConnell has been absent from the Senate since June 14, when he was hospitalized. The sparse updates from his office fueled speculation, and last week Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear publicly asked for a health and fitness update.

McConnell, a polio survivor, said he remains fit to serve but will not return to the Senate floor to vote yet on his doctors' advice. He said he has been working with legislative staff and his Kentucky team on constituent services.

He stepped down as Senate GOP leader at the start of this Congress, handing the role to Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.). McConnell is set to retire at the end of his term next year.
