Matthews International Capital Management founders G. Paul Matthews and Mark Headley completed a buyout to retake control of the Asia-focused investment firm, restoring independent ownership.
Matthews International Capital Management is back under the control of its founders. G. Paul Matthews and Mark Headley completed a transaction that gives them a controlling stake in the boutique Asia-focused investment firm, the company said Wednesday.
Several long-time partners increased their equity stakes alongside the founders. The deal returns Matthews to independent ownership after a period where outside investors held influence over the firm's direction.
"It is a privilege to become a controlling shareholder of Matthews alongside my longtime partner and colleague, Paul," Headley said in a statement. "The completion of this transaction reflects our shared conviction in the future of the company we have built together."
Matthews manages assets for institutions, advisors, and individual investors through mutual funds, active ETFs, and separately managed accounts. The firm has built a reputation around its Asia and Global Emerging Markets focus since its founding in 1991.
Headley will remain deeply involved in strategic direction, working with Chief Investment Officer Sean Taylor and recently appointed President and COO Marty Dropkin. Paul Matthews said he is confident the firm is "well positioned for the future" under the independent structure.
The transaction closed without disclosing financial terms. Matthews is privately held and does not release financial results.
For investors tracking the asset management space, the buyout removes the overhang of potential strategic shifts that outside ownership can create. The firm's Asia-focused strategy has been a differentiator in a market where many competitors have consolidated or broadened their mandates. The founders' increased stake signals alignment with that focus, not a pivot.
