President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and first lady Liza Araneta-Marcos will wear more understated attire for the fifth State of the Nation Address on Monday, July 27. Deputy Social Secretary Dina Arroyo Tantoco said the shift reflects a directive from the House of Representatives for a simpler, more dignified atmosphere.
Three designers – Francis Libiran, Michael Leyva and Paul Cabral – submitted sketches for the first lady's consideration. Tantoco said the first lady will still wear a terno, but it will be less embroidered and less intricate. The president has already chosen his barong, though Tantoco could not confirm the designer's name as of Sunday.
Tantoco also said the president has been rehearsing his speech. The first lady has taken on several official engagements, including rice distribution, to free up his time for the address. Despite political noise around the event, Tantoco described the couple's mood as calm and focused. "Their goal is just to make everyone feel secure and happy," she said.
