Manulife Hong Kong and Macau appointed Lilian Ng as an independent non-executive director, adding a veteran of three decades at Prudential to a board facing intensifying competition across Asia's life insurance market. Ng, who served as Prudential's regional CEO for Greater China and ran its Strategic Business Group, brings experience in corporate governance, actuarial management and multi-channel distribution.
Incoming Manulife Hong Kong CEO Wilton Kee said Ng's regional perspective would support the company's expansion. "Lilian's deep industry expertise, regional perspective and strong governance experience will be a valuable addition to our Board," Kee said in a statement. Ng said she looked forward to joining as the insurer entered its next phase of growth.
Ng spent more than 30 years at Prudential, most recently overseeing operations in Hong Kong, mainland China and Taiwan. She also held roles as CEO for Asia Insurance and chief operating officer of Prudential Corporation Asia, helping build customer strategies across digital and agent channels. A qualified actuary, she has worked with regulators across multiple Asian markets – a skill set that matters in Hong Kong, where the Insurance Authority has tightened governance and capital rules in recent years.
The appointment is the latest move by Manulife to strengthen independent board oversight as it competes with AIA and Prudential for share in Hong Kong's life and health market. Manulife Hong Kong has been expanding its wealth management and retirement product lines, areas where Ng's experience at Prudential's Greater China operations could offer direct insight.
Ng's term begins immediately. She will sit on the board of Manulife (International) Limited, the Hong Kong unit, alongside existing independent directors.
