Three candidates backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani won their Democratic House primaries Tuesday night, defeating two sitting incumbents in districts across the city.
Brad Lander, the former city comptroller, unseated Rep. Dan Goldman in the 10th congressional district, which covers parts of lower Manhattan and Brooklyn. Darializa Avila Chevalier beat Rep. Adriano Espaillat in the 13th District, which includes upper Manhattan and sections of the Bronx. Claire Valdez won the primary for an open seat in the 7th District, representing parts of Brooklyn and Queens. The Democratic Socialists of America backed both Chevalier and Valdez.
The DSA's organizing apparatus helped Mamdani defeat former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic mayoral primary a year ago, a race that shifted the local power structure.
In the 12th District, which covers parts of Manhattan, state Assemblyman Micah Lasher won the crowded primary to succeed retiring Rep. Jerry Nadler. He defeated fellow Assemblyman Alex Bores and a large field that included Jake Schlossberg, a grandson of President John F. Kennedy.
Two political action committees linked to major artificial-intelligence companies spent a combined $20 million in that race, backing Bores and opposing Lasher.
All four winners are heavy favorites in November, given the overwhelming Democratic advantage in their districts.
