LSE plans a separate night-time venue for 2027, starting with ETPs, as crypto exchanges and tokenized platforms already offer 24/7 stock trading. The main market keeps its normal hours.
The London Stock Exchange is preparing a separate night-time trading venue for the first half of 2027, the Financial Times reported.
The planned market would open from 5:00 p.m. to 7:50 a.m. London time, with a 30-minute processing break, and start with exchange-traded products linked to U.K. and U.S. markets. The main LSE order book would keep its 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. schedule.
LSE chief executive Julia Hoggett told the FT that retail traders showed growing interest "to use London, given our particular timezone, to gain exposure to not only UK assets but global assets." The timetable could let Asian-hours investors trade London-listed products on a regulated venue.
Crypto exchanges and tokenized equity platforms already offer round-the-clock access. Nasdaq said it planned 24-hour weekday trading in the second half of 2026, subject to regulatory approval. CME and Cboe have also pursued longer hours.
Tokenized stocks give eligible investors blockchain-based equity exposure and, depending on the product, support trading beyond the hours of the underlying share's home market. Backpack launched 24/7 trading for selected U.S. equities across more than 150 markets, offering Solana-based tokenized versions users can transfer and redeem. Binance launched bStocks in June, letting eligible users convert holdings in stocks like Nvidia, Tesla and Circle into tokenized assets that trade 24/7, backed 1:1 by underlying securities.
Tokenized stock transfers rose 105% in one month to $8.41 billion, while distributed value reached $2.16 billion, based on RWA.xyz data cited in market reports. Holders exceeded 409,000.
The LSE plan would keep overnight trading within a traditional exchange structure rather than move listed products onto blockchain rails. Starting with ETPs lets the venue track broad markets without opening overnight trading across every individual share. The exchange has not yet disclosed a full product list, fee structure or a more precise launch date beyond the first half of 2027.
