A pop-up performance of the original Kunqu production Age of Splendour took place August 4 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The event, co-hosted by the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Culture, Radio, Television and Tourism and the United Nations Staff Recreation Council Chinese Book Club, drew diplomats and officials from multiple permanent missions and international agencies.
Performers from the Zhejiang Jingkun Art Center delivered the 80-minute program. The production draws on historical sources to portray Tang Dynasty figures including Princess Taiping and Shangguan Wan'er, using Kunqu singing, stylized movement, and stagecraft. Two classic excerpts were also staged: Night Flight, a martial-arts showcase, and Fifteen Strings of Cash: Trouble from a Rat, a comedic clown-role piece.
