Three dead, 21 rescued after a three-storey under-construction warehouse collapsed in Kolkata's Taratala. Rescue teams search for 12-18 workers still trapped. CM Banerjee orders judicial inquiry, suspends engineer and site supervisor.
A three-storey under-construction warehouse collapsed in Kolkata's Taratala area on Wednesday afternoon, killing at least three people and leaving an estimated 12 to 18 workers feared trapped under the debris. Rescue teams pulled 21 people out alive, officials said.
The building gave way around 2:30 p.m. local time, according to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. Emergency crews from the National Disaster Response Force and local fire services reached the site within 30 minutes. They worked through the evening, cutting through steel beams and concrete slabs to reach survivors.
One rescued worker, speaking from a hospital bed, said he heard a loud crack before the roof came down. "There was no warning. The whole floor just dropped," he told reporters. Doctors at the nearby Taratala General Hospital said five of the rescued were in critical condition with crush injuries and fractures.
The structure was being built for a private logistics firm, according to the local police station's initial report. Neighbors said construction had been going on for eight months. They complained about the speed of work and the quality of materials being used.
"We heard banging and shouting. Then a cloud of dust," said a shopkeeper across the street. "The noise lasted maybe 10 seconds. Then silence."
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹5 lakh to the families of each deceased worker. She ordered a judicial inquiry into the collapse, naming retired Calcutta High Court judge Justice Ashim Kumar Banerjee to head the probe. The inquiry must submit its report within 60 days.
The state government also suspended the building's structural engineer and the site supervisor pending investigation. Kolkata Police registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder against the contractor and the developer.
Building collapses remain a recurring problem in Kolkata's older industrial zones. Taratala, a dense neighborhood of factories and godowns, has seen three such incidents in the past five years. In 2023, a four-storey building under renovation collapsed in the same area, killing six.
Rescue operations continued past midnight. NDRF teams used sniffer dogs and thermal cameras to locate survivors under the rubble. A crane was brought in to lift the largest concrete slabs. Officials said the search would go on until every trapped person was accounted for.
"We are not stopping until we clear the last slab," said a senior NDRF officer at the scene.
