KFC outlet sealed in Mangaluru after customer reports spoiled chicken

Food safety officials in Mangaluru sealed a KFC outlet at City Centre mall on KS Rao Road after a customer complained that an online order contained spoiled, foul-smelling chicken, news agency ANI reported.

Inspectors examined the kitchen, storeroom, and cold storage units. The establishment's go-down was also sealed. Food samples were collected and sent to a laboratory for testing. Officials from the Food Safety Department said further legal and administrative action will be determined after the test results are available.

The Mangaluru action is part of a broader series of food safety inspections across Karnataka. In Mysuru, officials seized 9 kg of expired chicken from Rio Meridian Hotel, 68 kg of meat from Grand Mercure Hotel, and 4 kg of mushrooms from Q Star Hotel. The Health Department also inspected three resorts in Mysuru and Nanjangud taluks, issuing three notices and collecting five food samples. They seized and discarded 16 kg of expired and perishable food items.

A separate inspection at a private hospital in Bengaluru turned up expired rava, icing sugar, maida, and bakery products. Ready-to-eat items past their expiry dates included four packets of mixture and nine packets of pani puri. Officials also found stale bread, two plastic chopper boards, five packets of methi leaves, six packets of fried gram weighing 30 kg, one packet of green peas weighing 30 kg, and five packets of moong dal weighing 30 kg each.

Last week, inspections at luxury hotels including Four Seasons and Shangri-La in Bengaluru uncovered expired milk and rotten meat. The Food Safety and Drug Administration Department initiated legal proceedings.

For the Mangaluru KFC outlet, the final action depends on the laboratory findings. Officials said further legal and administrative steps will follow once the official test results are available.
