JD Sports appoints former Ikea president Peter Agnefjäll as chair
Former Ikea president Peter Agnefjäll will chair JD Sports from Sept. 1, bringing deep retail transformation experience to the sportswear giant as it pushes omnichannel growth.

JD Sports Fashion has named Peter Agnefjäll, the former president and CEO of Ikea Group, as its next chair. He takes the role Sept. 1, 2026, replacing interim chair Darren Shapland.
Agnefjäll spent nearly two decades at Ikea, rising to president and CEO from 2013 to 2017. He oversaw a period of growth and digital transformation at the furniture retailer. He later chaired Ahold Delhaize from 2021 to 2025 and currently serves as a non-executive director at WPP. He was a board member at Orkla from 2018 to 2026 and held non-executive roles at Deichmann and Wizz Air.
Shapland, who became interim chair after JD's annual general meeting in July 2026, will stay on as an independent director. He welcomed Agnefjäll in a statement: "He brings an exceptional combination of international retail leadership, board experience and a proven track record of overseeing growth and transformation in complex global businesses."
