Is Fundamentalism a Result of a Falling of Social Democracy?

Multinational corporations mint millionaires from their ranks. Medium and smaller businesses falter. The social net is being dismantled by a capitalism that has forgotten the term democracy, let alone social democracy. Direct democracy has all but died. Democracy survived and transitioned. Today capitalism's need to expand, grow, and profit is pushing social democracy toward its end. Technology also plays a role. It slowly shows how the human being can be dispensed with, how thinking and creating can be replaced by technological advancements.

The new fundamentalist calls for nationalistic uprisings and protectionist elements add to a storyline that does not bode well for democracy. Freedom of thought, freedom of movement, freedom of opinion. The real question is: if social democracy falls, what will replace it?

The answer may be quite scary. History shows such transitions rarely lead to stability, economic comfort, or the freedoms many enjoyed during social democracy. Scarier still is that today's generation looks at technology and social media as the replacement on economic, social, and political levels. Have we really thought out what that would mean? Or are we at the point where thinking about such things is too much of a stretch for today's human being?
