India's mutual fund AUM surged 17% in five years, fastest globally, as unique investors tripled to 6.1 crore, with retail participation widening and corporate share declining.
The Indian mutual fund industry's net AUM rose 17% between December 2020 and December 2025, the fastest pace among major markets globally, according to the Factbook 2026 released by AMFI and Crisil.
Global mutual fund AUM grew 7% over the same period. The US recorded 9% growth, Europe 5%, Asia Pacific 3%, and Africa 8%.
India's share of global mutual fund assets increased from 0.64% to 1.01%, the report said.
The report attributed the growth to rising formalisation of household finance, wider SIP-led retail participation, and digital access.
Sundeep Sikka, Chairman of AMFI, said asset management companies globally are operating in an environment shaped by higher interest rates and shifting investor preferences. Many mature markets are seeing slower growth, while India stands out as a bright spot, he said.
Venkat Nageswar Chalasani, CEO of AMFI, said India showed remarkable maturity in absorbing global shocks.
"Instead of slowing down, India's domestic capital markets showed remarkable maturity, absorbing global shocks and keeping momentum strong."
Chalasani said.
The number of unique mutual fund investors rose from 2.3 crore in March 2021 to 6.1 crore in March 2026, nearly 2.7 times. The report said this reflects wider household participation rather than just market appreciation.
Corporate investors remained the largest segment, but their share moderated from 41% to 37% as retail and institutional participation expanded faster.
