India's core sector grew 5% in June, fastest in five months, driven by cement, electricity and iron ore. ICRA said the pickup was not broad-based, with four of nine sectors declining.
India's nine core infrastructure sectors expanded 5% in June from a year earlier, the fastest pace in five months, official data released Monday showed. Cement and electricity output each rose 9.8%, while iron ore–included in the index for the first time under a revised series–surged 43.9%.
The data uses a new base year of 2022-23, replacing the 2011-12 series. The commerce and industry ministry added iron ore as a ninth core sector, citing its intensive use in industrial production. Coal output edged up 1.4%, reversing a 6.8% contraction in the same month last year.
Steel output growth slowed to 4.6% from 10.2% a year ago, the weakest pace in 21 months. Fertiliser production contracted for the fourth consecutive month, which ICRA Ltd attributed to the continued impact of the West Asia tensions. Crude oil, natural gas and refinery products also declined.
“The pick-up in June was not broad-based and was led by an improvement in the performance of just four of the nine sectors,” the rating agency said.
For the first quarter of the fiscal year, the core sectors expanded 3.6% against 1% in the same period of 2025-26. The base effect from the new series partly explains the acceleration, though the underlying pattern remains uneven.
Cement and electricity growth point to sustained construction activity and peak summer power demand. Coal output, though modest, helps thermal power plants maintain stockpiles before the monsoon. The weak spots–crude oil, natural gas, refinery products and fertiliser–reflect separate pressures. ICRA said fertiliser supply chains have been disrupted by the West Asia situation, while the energy complex faces softer global refining margins and lower domestic gas output.
ICRA expects core sector growth to stay in the 3-5% range in the near term, constrained by the narrow breadth evident in the June print.
