India's 125-run T20I loss to England, their heaviest in the format, has fans demanding changes. Captain Iyer called the batting 'atrocious.' The series sits at 2-0.
India's T20I team is in freefall. The 125-run defeat to England at Trent Bridge was their heaviest loss in the format by runs, and it left the five-match series at 2-0 with no path to a win. Social media erupted after the match, with fans directing their anger at head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar.
"Ajit Agarkar and Gautam Gambhir should step down gracefully," one user wrote. "You cannot keep promoting Mumbai and Delhi players."
The criticism follows a pattern. India has not won a T20I under captain Shreyas Iyer, who now holds a five-match winless streak. Ireland whitewashed India 2-0 before this series. The team has lost four of its last five T20Is.
England set a target of 201 for 7 after India won the toss and chose to field. Phil Salt's 70 off 44 balls anchored the innings. Sam Curran added an unbeaten 41 late. India's reply collapsed to 76 all out in 11.4 overs, their second-lowest total in T20Is. Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue tore through the top order, leaving India at 52 for 5 during the power play. Only four batters reached double figures. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Ishan Kishan each top-scored with 13.
Iyer called the batting "atrocious" after the match. He said the pitch was not a 200-run wicket and that losing five wickets in the power play created unstoppable momentum for England. "We need to go back to the drawing board," he said.
Fans questioned the team management's decisions. Suryakumar Yadav was removed as captain due to poor form and then dropped from the squad entirely. Sanju Samson, the man of the series from the T20 World Cup-winning campaign, was in the squad but did not play. Yuzvendra Chahal, widely considered India's best spinner, was not in the team.
"That's what you deserve for dropping the captain and Man of the Series of the World Cup-winning team," one user wrote. "Chahal is your best spinner in the country, and he is not even in the team."
Another user wrote: "If this team continues, it will not even win against the Pakistan women's team. Change the useless coaches and get back senior players and build the team, and not with IPL performance."
The batting approach drew sharp criticism. "Everyone wants to be a slogger.. quick fame, quick money...Nobody cares about real cricket anymore," one fan observed. Another wrote: "Everyone in the team wants to be another Vaibhav Sooryavanshi now. One of the worst games played. Too casual to be Team India."
The series moves to the fourth T20I on Friday. India needs a win to avoid a 3-0 deficit.
