Indian single malt whisky sales rose 22% to 5 lakh cases in 2025, led by domestic brands. Diageo's Godawan holds a 7% share, giving the spirits giant a niche foothold in a fast-premiumising market.
Alpha Score of 51 reflects moderate overall profile with moderate momentum, moderate value, weak quality, moderate sentiment.
Indian single malt whisky sales hit about 5 lakh nine-litre cases in 2025, up roughly 22% from a year earlier, according to data from the Confederation of Indian Alcoholic Beverage Companies (CIABC).
The growth is led by homegrown labels such as Amrut, Rampur, Indri and Paul John, which together account for an estimated 92% of the 'Made in India' single malt category. That translates to about 4.65 lakh cases, CIABC said.
Foreign-backed brands hold a much smaller slice. Diageo's Godawan and Pernod Ricard's Longitude 77 together represent around 7% of the category, or roughly 35,000 cases of nine litres each. For Diageo, whose DEO stock page carries a Mixed Alpha Score of 40, the Godawan brand is a niche but growing piece of its India business.
The broader Indian single malt market – including imported bottles – reached about 8.5 lakh cases in 2025, CIABC said. Imported single malts, bottled at origin, held steady at roughly 3.5 lakh cases.
CIABC Director General Anant S Iyer said the category has moved beyond awards and into measurable premium spirits territory. "Indian single malt is no longer only an awards-led story; it is becoming a measurable premium spirits category," he said. "Indian companies continue to lead this space with several new domestic players lining up launches and global companies operating in India also investing in Indian-origin single malts."
The category has expanded 43% over two years, from 3.5 lakh cases in 2023 to the current 5 lakh level. Entry-level single malts start around ₹2,300; premium aged expressions sell for ₹5,500 to ₹8,000.
The Indian Malt Whisky Association recently introduced a certification trademark – a hologram – to set authenticity and quality standards aligned with global benchmarks while accounting for India's climate and terroir.
