Lower duties on bulk Scotch imports cut costs for Indian bottlers such as United Spirits. Nuvama says margins and volumes should rise.
The India-UK free trade agreement went into force this week. Tariffs on Scotch whisky imports came down. For Indian liquor companies that blend bulk Scotch into their own brands, that means lower input costs.
Nuvama Institutional Equities has buy ratings on United Spirits and Radico Khaitan. Allied Blenders received the same call. Analyst Abneesh Roy described the tariff cut as positive for all liquor companies. He expects margins and volumes to improve.
The mechanism is straightforward. About 79% of Scotch shipped to India arrives in bulk form, destined for local bottling and blending. The duty reduction on that bulk stream cuts the raw material cost for Indian Made Foreign Liquor producers. The tariff on bottled Scotch also falls, which could pull more premium imports onto shelves. That part benefits consumers and importers.
ISWAI, the trade body for premium alcobev companies, welcomed the agreement. CEO Sanjit Padhi said the lower duties give Indian manufacturers a chance to raise product quality and compete internationally. He said the deal accelerates the premiumization trend in Indian spirits.
That trend matters because imported spirits hold only a 2.5% share of India's 400-million-case annual market. Scotch alone accounts for 81% of the 9.9 million imported cases. Even a small shift in that share – from cheaper bulk blends or from bottled Scotch – would show up in revenue for the listed bottlers.
What could go wrong. State-level excise duties remain high. The central tariff cut does not change what states charge on alcohol sales. If states do not follow with their own adjustments, the retail price benefit may be muted. Volume growth also depends on consumer spending, which has been uneven across income brackets.
The first test comes with quarterly earnings. If United Spirits and Radico show margin expansion in the next two reports, the tariff cut is working. If not, the bottleneck is elsewhere.
