India's road accident data for 2025, tabled in the Lok Sabha, reveals a sharp divergence between two of the country's largest states. Tamil Nadu reported the highest number of crashes at 71,387, while Uttar Pradesh recorded the most fatalities at 27,550. The ratio of accidents to deaths tells a more nuanced story: Tamil Nadu saw 3.86 accidents per fatality, Uttar Pradesh just 1.80.
Bal Malkit Singh, advisor to the All India Motor Transport Congress, said the figures reflect two distinct safety challenges. Tamil Nadu's high crash volume, paired with a lower fatality rate, points to better road infrastructure and emergency response, even as driving behavior remains a problem. Uttar Pradesh's higher fatality ratio suggests severe highway collisions, poor road engineering, and gaps in trauma care.
