India Launches UN Security Council Campaign for 2028-29 Term

India has served on the Security Council as an elected member eight times, most recently for the 2021-22 term, when it held the rotating presidency twice. The elections for the 2028-29 term are scheduled for June 2027, with India and Tajikistan contesting the sole seat available in the Asia-Pacific Group category.

The campaign launch comes as Prime Minister Narendra Modi this week told the Indonesian Parliament that UN Security Council reform could no longer be delayed, pointing to a global order in transition where developing countries seek equal participation. India has long pushed for expansion of both the permanent and non-permanent categories of the 15-member council, arguing it does not reflect current geopolitical realities.

For the bid, India has adopted the message “#India4UNSC 2028-29 Peace, Planet, Progress.”
