Heartland Advisors added IFF in Q2, citing a 12.2x EBITDA multiple vs Givaudan's 19.1x and a new buyback. The specialty chemical firm is restructuring for higher margins.
Heartland Advisors added International Flavors & Fragrances to its Mid Cap Value Fund in the second quarter, betting the specialty chemical company's restructuring will close a valuation gap with industry leader Givaudan. The fund called it a "self-help opportunity" in its latest investor letter, pointing to a forward EBITDA multiple of 12.23x versus Givaudan's 19.14x.
IFF, which operates across food, beverage, personal care and household products, is in the middle of a multiyear portfolio overhaul. Management has been shedding lower-margin businesses and focusing on segments where it holds leading market share. Taste generates about 30% of profit. Health and Biosciences delivers 37%. Scent contributes the remaining 32%. Within Scent, IFF's encapsulated fragrance technology has locked in leadership in fabric care, now expanding into shampoo and body wash categories.
Heartland said the restructuring should push IFF's margins and free cash flow closer to Givaudan's. "We believe IFF is poised to operationally resemble industry leader Givaudan," the fund wrote in its Q2 update. The firm also noted that management recently instituted its first share buyback program in six years, a signal of confidence.
The bet comes with risks. Hedge fund ownership fell to 35 funds in Q1 from 39 in the prior quarter, according to filings. IFF's shares have returned only 0.6% over the past 52 weeks and slipped 1.8% in the month through July 14. AlphaScala's proprietary model assigns the stock a score of 39 out of 100, labeling sentiment as mixed. The company also operates in the cyclical Basic Materials sector, where earnings can swing with input costs and demand.
IFF closed at $74.67 on July 14, giving it a market cap of roughly $19.1 billion. The next earnings report will show whether volume growth across all three segments, which Q1 delivered, can hold under the company's new operational targets.
