Hedgehog USA secures long-term Texas data center power from Idemitsu, locking gas contracts and pipeline capacity years before construction starts.
A Texas data center developer locked in a long-term energy supply agreement with one of Japan's largest energy companies, tying natural gas contracts to construction timelines before a single customer signs on.
Hedgehog USA, based in Plano, Texas, signed an agreement with Idemitsu Kosan Co. Ltd. for pipeline capacity and firm transportation that the developer said would make its initial portfolio of sites truly shovel-ready. The deal covers power supply for Hedgehog's first batch of powered land sites, which the company plans to develop for hyperscale and enterprise data center users.
Under the agreement, Idemitsu will provide long-term energy solutions for large-load, mission-critical facilities, Hedgehog said. The developer is using a behind-the-meter strategy – owning the land, mineral and surface rights before engaging any customer, and locking in gas contracts years ahead of commercial operation.
"Firm commitments, ready land, no surprises," said Atul Anand, Delhi-based co-founder and vice chairman of Hedgehog, in a statement. He described the deal as a model for the AI era where energy certainty comes before construction.
John Happ, chief commercial officer and SVP of gas and power trading at Idemitsu, said the collaboration was "exceptionally uncommon for a landowner to make this level of infrastructure commitment in advance of development." He predicted the approach would become the industry standard as behind-the-meter power solutions gain adoption across the data center sector.
The rapid growth of artificial intelligence and cloud computing has intensified competition for sites with access to scalable, reliable power. Hedgehog's model commits to natural gas contracts and full ownership of property with all subsurface rights secured prior to customer engagement, the company said.
Marathon Capital, the Chicago-based investment bank, is serving as exclusive financial advisor for the sale of 100% of the project and providing strategic guidance on development and market positioning. Gerry Willinger, a managing director at Marathon Capital, said the firm's 25-year history at the intersection of energy markets and infrastructure positioned it to secure the energy solutions its clients need.
Idemitsu, one of Japan's largest energy and industrial companies, is expanding its U.S. presence through Idemitsu Americas Holdings with nationwide natural gas supply operations. The company is also exploring energy services for data centers including immersion cooling, diesel backup support and battery storage.
Hedgehog USA was founded with offices in Plano, Texas. Its leadership team includes decades of experience in data center development, utilities and real estate, the company said.
