Healthcare Economists Debate Free Market Reforms at Mises Panel

Four economists argued for market-based healthcare reform at a Mises Institute panel in Windham, New Hampshire, on June 27.

Ryan McMaken, Timothy Terrell, Charles Sauer, and Robert Murphy took audience questions on the economics of the U.S. healthcare system. They blamed price controls and licensing rules for driving up costs. Third-party payer systems amplify the problem, they said. Removing regulatory barriers would lower prices without sacrificing quality, the panelists argued.

The Mises Institute, based in Auburn, Alabama, promotes the Austrian School of economics and the ideas of Ludwig von Mises and Murray Rothbard. The institute opposes government intervention in health markets and advocates for private property order as an alternative to the current system.
