Workers lowered reinforcement cages into the excavation pit at Pham Van Bach Station, marking the start of full-scale construction for HCMC's second metro line.
Workers this week lowered the initial steel reinforcement cages into an excavation pit near the Cong Hoa–Truong Chinh intersection in Ho Chi Minh City. The move marks the project's shift from preparation to full-scale construction, the city's Management Authority for Urban Railways (MAUR) said.
The diaphragm wall at Pham Van Bach Station will reach a depth of 41 meters and extend roughly 534 meters around the pit. MAUR expects the wall construction to take six months. During the building phase, the wall will retain soil and groundwater to keep the excavation stable. Once the station is finished, it becomes a permanent load-bearing part of the structure.
Pham Van Bach Station sits at the gateway to Tan Son Nhat International Airport. It is the final underground stop before Metro Line 2 rises to an elevated section at Tan Binh Station. The station has two underground levels for ticketing, operations, and passenger platforms.
Phan Cong Bang, head of MAUR, said Pham Van Bach Station and Le Thi Rieng Station will serve as the primary launch sites for the tunnel boring machines (TBMs) that will excavate the underground routes. Both stations have been prioritized for early construction, scheduled to finish by the third quarter of 2027, to allow TBM installation and operation.
MAUR acknowledged that simultaneous construction along the route will affect local traffic. The agency has set up barriers, traffic diversions, and designated staging areas to reduce disruption.
The Ben Thanh–Tham Luong Metro Line officially began construction in mid-January. Total investment is over VND55 trillion (US$2.1 billion). The line stretches nearly 11.3 kilometers, with more than 9 kilometers underground. It has 10 underground stations, one elevated station, and a single depot. The project is set to finish in 2030, linking downtown HCMC with the city's northwestern area.
HCMC currently operates one metro line, the 20-km Ben Thanh–Suoi Tien route, which opened in late 2024 and connects downtown to Thu Duc City.
