Goop founder posts fake invitations for Shrek, Jessica Rabbit after critics call 'off-the-record' dinner tone-deaf. Paltrow has invested in AI startups.
Gwyneth Paltrow is leaning into the controversy. The Goop founder posted a series of spoof invitations on Instagram Thursday, days after Puck reported she planned a "private, off-the-record al fresco dinner" at her home for OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
Her mock invitations mimicked the leaked design – blue lettering on cream – but swapped Altman's name for fictional characters: Jessica Rabbit, Shrek, and M3gan. "We're serving swordfish burritos, cheddar foam lattes on request," she wrote.
The post drew more than 800 comments within hours. Some users called the joke tone-deaf. "Stop supporting AI giants. Hope this helps, Gwyneth," one comment with 500 likes read. Others asked for an explanation.
News of the original dinner had sparked backlash earlier this week. Critics called it out of touch, and the off-the-record framing drew mockery on Reddit, where a thread speculating on the leak received nearly 500 comments.
Paltrow has pushed deeper into AI. Her investments include the customer-service automation startup Forethought AI and the text-to-speech platform Speechify. At the Meltwater Summit in May, she said her team at Goop uses AI to create assets, and she uses it as a "chief of staff." Her Goop podcast featured Anduril co-founder Trae Stephens in June.
She did not respond to requests for comment on the dinner's guest list or purpose.
