Gujarat will redevelop the Air India crash site in Ahmedabad into a ₹547-crore medical hub with a spine hospital, hostels, and labs, replacing damaged buildings.
The Gujarat government plans to redevelop the Ahmedabad site of last year's Air India plane crash into a health and medical education hub, with projects worth more than ₹547 crore.
Health Minister Praful Pansheriya announced the plan on the first anniversary of the June 12, 2025 tragedy, which killed 260 people. The state will transform the New Mental Campus in Meghaninagar, where the aircraft crash-landed, by removing fully and partially damaged buildings.
The largest project under the redevelopment is a ₹295-crore Paraplegia and Spine Hospital with a rehabilitation centre, physiotherapy college, and hostel facilities for 500 students. It will occupy nearly 25,000 square metres.
The government will also build new G+7 hostel blocks with 510 residential units for married postgraduate students at an estimated ₹192 crore. A modern canteen seating 800 students will cost ₹10 crore, and a NABL-standard Food and Drugs Laboratory in a G+7 structure over 3,100 square metres will cost ₹50 crore.
Officials said the redevelopment will replace buildings damaged in the crash and create a centre for healthcare delivery, research, and medical education. Once completed, the campus is expected to become one of Gujarat's leading health-services and research hubs.
A prayer meeting was held at BJ Medical College for the deceased on Friday morning. Family members of crash victims were expected to visit the site later in the day for a candle-light vigil.
