GrubMarket buys SPUD, gaining a two-decade-old online grocer with three B.C. distribution centers and 800+ local supplier partnerships. The Vancouver brand filed for creditor protection in 2022 before relaunching under private equity ownership.
San Francisco-based GrubMarket has acquired Vancouver-based online grocer Sustainable Produce Urban Delivery, known as SPUD, for an undisclosed sum.
The deal, announced Tuesday, gives GrubMarket a direct-to-consumer foothold in British Columbia and Alberta under a brand that has operated for nearly three decades. SPUD's physical retail banners, Blush Lane Organic Market and Be Fresh Market, are not included and will remain under the control of private equity backer Third Eye Capital.
SPUD's network runs out of three distribution centers in Calgary, Edmonton, and Burnaby, B.C., totaling more than 85,000 square feet. The company counts partnerships with over 800 local farmers, producers, and food entrepreneurs, according to GrubMarket.
"Our mission has always been to build a more sustainable food system by connecting Western Canadian communities with high quality, responsibly-sourced food," SPUD CEO Claude Church said in a statement. "We believe SPUD is well positioned to amplify its impact, strengthen its support for local farmers and producers, and reach more households that share our values."
As part of the transaction, Third Eye Capital is participating in GrubMarket's Series H round. GrubMarket first entered Canada in 2021 through the acquisition of Vancouver-based e-commerce startup Funtech. SPUD's existing management team will stay in place as GrubMarket folds its technology platform, which includes AI workflow and financial tools, into the operation.
The acquisition comes after SPUD filed for creditor protection in 2022, a process that ended with Third Eye taking ownership and relaunching the brand the following year.
