GRSE won a ₹1,032 crore ONGC order for four platform supply vessels with hybrid propulsion, a push into commercial shipbuilding beyond its core warship business.
Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE) has secured a contract from Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd (ONGC) to build four platform supply vessels (PSVs) worth more than ₹1,032 crore. The notification of award arrived on July 30, covering the design, construction, and delivery of the vessels.
The order marks a deliberate push into non-defense work for the state-owned shipbuilder, which has traditionally focused on warships for the Indian Navy and Coast Guard. GRSE said the vessels will be built to Indian Register of Shipping rules and will include advanced technology for offshore oil and gas support.
Each vessel will be about 80 metres long, with a beam of 20 metres, deadweight capacity of 3,000 tonnes, and endurance of 45 days plus three more. The clear deck area of roughly 650 square metres will allow for a wide range of logistics and support missions.
A key feature is the hybrid propulsion system. GRSE said the ships will use electrically driven azimuth thrusters and a lithium-ion battery energy storage system. The battery system is designed to handle peak loads, serve as spinning reserve, support dynamic positioning, and provide emergency response functions. That setup should cut fuel consumption and emissions compared with conventional diesel drives.
“The latest order further expands GRSE’s footprint in the commercial and offshore vessel market and underscores its capability to deliver technologically advanced and environmentally sustainable maritime solutions,” the company said in a statement.
Over the past six decades, GRSE has built and delivered more than 800 platforms, including 118 warships to the Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard, and friendly foreign navies. The ONGC contract is one of the company’s larger commercial orders and signals a shift toward diversifying its revenue base beyond defence contracts.
The vessels are intended for offshore exploration and production support, a segment that has seen steady demand as India pushes to boost domestic oil and gas output. The contract also puts GRSE in direct competition with private shipyards that typically build such vessels for the energy sector.
GRSE shares closed at ₹1,285.00 on the NSE on July 30, up 0.8% on the day.
