Gold rises in Delhi, Mumbai; spot up 0.4% as weaker oil and Middle East hopes drive biggest weekly gain since January. Silver also firms.
Gold prices in India edged higher on Friday, tracking a weekly gain in international markets that was the biggest since January. Spot gold rose 0.4% to $4,254.11 an ounce after hitting a seven-week high in the prior session, according to a CNBC report. Weaker oil prices and hopes for a Middle East ceasefire supported the move, while traders waited for U.S. nonfarm payrolls data that could shift the rate outlook.
In Mumbai, 24-karat gold was quoted at ₹149,280 per 10 grams, up from Thursday's close. Delhi saw 24-karat at ₹149,020. Kolkata quoted ₹149,080. The small city-level spreads – about ₹700 between the highest and lowest – reflect local taxes and transport costs, not a divergence in underlying demand.
Silver also firmed. MCX silver futures traded 0.9% higher at ₹228,660 per kg. In the retail market, 999-fine silver in Mumbai was ₹228,370 per kg, with Delhi at ₹227,970.
Gold's weekly gain of more than 5% came as the dollar softened and crude oil fell, reducing inflation hedging pressure. Lower oil prices tend to support gold because they ease the need for aggressive rate hikes. The nonfarm payrolls report due later Friday will test whether the rally holds. A strong number would push yields higher and cap gold; a weak print could extend the move toward $4,300.
For Indian buyers, the domestic premium over international prices has narrowed slightly. The MCX gold futures contract was at ₹149,490 per 10 grams, roughly in line with retail rates after accounting for GST and making charges. That suggests physical demand is steady but not surging ahead of the festive season.
The broader trend remains tied to U.S. rate expectations. Gold's rally this week was built on bets that the Federal Reserve will cut rates sooner than previously priced. If payrolls disappoint, those bets will strengthen. If they beat, the metal's recent highs may prove short-lived.
