GAIL Pipeline Network to Hit 20,000 km on 1,500 km Under Construction

GAIL will expand its natural gas pipeline network to 20,000 km after completing 1,500 km under construction. The company is also doubling LPG pipeline capacity and building a petrochemical plant in Maharashtra.
Gas Authority of India Ltd. will expand its natural gas pipeline network to roughly 20,000 km once about 1,500 km of projects under construction are completed, Chairman and Managing Director Deepak Gupta told shareholders at the company's annual general meeting on Thursday.
"Our network now extends over 18,690 km, with nearly 1,500 km under construction. Upon completion of the ongoing projects, the network will expand to almost 20,000 km," Gupta said.
GAIL is also doubling capacity on its LPG transmission pipeline from Jamnagar to Loni to 6.5 million tonnes per annum from the current 3.25 MMTPA, he said. That expansion builds on three LPG pipelines, cumulatively spanning about 1,775 km, that recently received approval from the Petroleum Natural Gas Regulatory Board.
On the petrochemicals side, GAIL is progressing with a 500 kilo-tonnes-per-annum propane dehydrogenation and polypropylene plant at Usar in Maharashtra, with an estimated investment of about ₹11,256 crore. Work is also under way at GAIL Mangalore Petrochemicals Ltd.'s 1.25 MMTPA purified terephthalic acid plant.
"These investments in petrochemicals are not simply about adding capacity. They are about developing a more diversified downstream business and strengthening the growth of GAIL's petrochemical portfolio," Gupta said.
The pipeline buildout comes as India's gas consumption rises. GAIL's network serves as the backbone for distribution across the country, and the additional 1,500 km will connect more industrial and residential consumers to the grid. The LPG pipeline doubling from Jamnagar to Loni will increase supply to northern markets from Gujarat's refining hub.
The PDH-PP plant at Usar, if completed on schedule, would mark GAIL's entry into polymer production, diversifying beyond its core gas transmission and LPG businesses. The company has not disclosed a target completion date for the project.
