India's food regulator sent notices to eight companies including Emami Healthy & Tasty and Plan B over brand names and claims it says violate the Food Safety and Standards Act.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India on Sunday sent notices to eight food companies for using brand names and product claims that violate the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The regulator posted the notices on its official social media accounts.
The companies named include Emami Healthy & Tasty, Health Aid, Troovy, The Healthy Factory, Healthy Master, Healthy Choice, Plan B and Neuherbs.
Emami Healthy & Tasty, the cooking oils arm of the Kolkata-based Emami Group, drew the regulator's attention for a trade name FSSAI said is "likely to mislead consumers and appears to be in contravention of applicable FSSAI regulations."
Plan B markets its products as "plant based vegan." FSSAI said the branding creates the impression the products are vegan without the company having obtained prior approval for vegan food endorsement in its licence.
The Healthy Factory's "Zero Maida Whole Wheat Bread" – which contains chakki fresh atta and wheat gluten – was flagged for misleading consumers. Its "zero maida pizza base" faces similar scrutiny, with FSSAI noting the claim appears to violate applicable rules.
Neuherbs' "True Vitamin" product line uses a trade name that is "neither defined nor recognised" under FSSAI regulations, making it potentially misleading, the regulator said.
Troovy's snack range, including "Healthy Mix Veggie Chips," "Healthy Ragi Chips" and "Healthy Moong Dal Chips," was flagged for making "healthy" claims despite containing a range of other ingredients.
FSSAI also cited Healthy Master's tagline "Vision to serve healthy," Healthy Choice's "Healthy food for Healthy life Poha," and Health Aid's brand name as likely to mislead consumers about the nature of the products.
The notices come as India's food regulator tightens enforcement on packaging claims. Companies that fail to respond or adjust their branding could face penalties under the 2006 Act, though FSSAI has not specified a deadline for compliance.
