Russia said Tuesday it was in contact with Indian officials after a missile strike on a cargo ship leaving Odesa killed four Indian crew members. Kyiv blamed Russia for the attack on the Golden Leo, a Guinea-Bissau-flagged vessel, which it said was hit with three cruise missiles on Sunday. Ten people died, including four Indians and several Syrian nationals, Ukraine said.
India summoned the Russian chargé d'affaires in New Delhi over the incident. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that Russia will continue striking vessels it believes are supplying the Ukrainian military, without commenting on the Golden Leo specifically.
The strike adds a new layer of risk for commercial shipping in the Black Sea, already under pressure from the war. Any escalation involving civilian vessels could further disrupt trade routes and raise diplomatic tensions between India and Russia, a long-standing partner. De-escalation would require clear assurances from Moscow that it will avoid targeting non-military ships.
