Ford recalls 548,463 Expedition SUVs over center console chrome that can peel and cause lacerations. 65 injuries reported. Notification letters June 29; remedy available January 2026.
Ford is recalling 548,463 Expedition SUVs from model years 2018 through 2024. The chrome plating on the center console can bubble and peel over time, leaving sharp edges that have already caused 65 injuries and one accident, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Thursday.
The defect traces to trim manufactured by suppliers Xin Point and Forvia. The parts were made using parameters that did not meet Ford's specifications, the NHTSA report says. Ford identified a trend in the agency's Vehicle Owner Questionnaires in September. Five of the six complaints alleged hand injuries from contact with the peeling chrome.
"Customer reports of hand and finger lacerations associated with this condition include a small number of instances stating that professional medical attention was required," the report says.
Ford will inspect affected vehicles at dealers and replace the center console at no cost. Notification letters are scheduled to go out June 29. A second round of letters will follow in January 2026 once the remedy is available, according to the NHTSA.
The recall covers a large portion of Ford's full-size SUV lineup. The Expedition is a high-margin vehicle for the company. Ford did not disclose the expected cost of the recall or whether it expects to recover costs from the suppliers.
