Farage resigns from Parliament to force a by-election as watchdogs probe undeclared £5M crypto gift from Harborne and benefits from Cottrell. He won Clacton in 2024 with 46.2% of the vote. The by-election date is not yet set.
Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform UK and MP for Clacton, resigned Monday to trigger a by-election. The move comes as the parliamentary standards watchdog investigates whether he failed to declare a £5 million gift from Christopher Harborne, a crypto billionaire based in Thailand. Additional benefits from George Cottrell, a convicted fraudster with crypto ties, are also under scrutiny.
Both Labour and the Conservatives said they will not contest the by-election. Reform UK has committed to covering the election costs. Farage won the seat in 2024 with 46.2% of the vote. He maintains the gifts were personal security funds, not political donations, and that he did nothing wrong.
The investigation by the UK Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards could recommend sanctions if rules were breached. Any finding of undeclared gifts from crypto-connected donors would add to the growing scrutiny of digital asset funding in UK politics.
A by-election date has not been set. Farage's ability to hold the seat will test whether the probe changes voters' views.
