Ex-Bengal Deputy Speaker Ashis Banerjee Found Hanging at TMC Office

Ashis Banerjee, former deputy speaker of the West Bengal Assembly, was found hanging at a Trinamool Congress party office in Birbhum district on Sunday morning, police sources told PTI. The office sits near his residence in Rampurhat.

A purported suicide note was recovered from the location, the sources said. The body has been sent for post-mortem; investigators have not yet determined the exact cause or circumstances of the death.

Banerjee served as deputy speaker while Mamata Banerjee was chief minister. He was a former TMC MLA from Rampurhat.

An official familiar with the probe said the police are also examining records from the party office and speaking to colleagues to piece together his final movements.

A short investigation update is expected within 48 hours, the official added.
