A former BDC Capital principal alleges wrongful termination after he refused to sign a confidentiality agreement linked to a workplace complaint, suing for over $900,000.
A former BDC Capital principal investor is suing the Crown corporation for wrongful dismissal, claiming he was fired after refusing to sign a confidentiality agreement tied to a workplace complaint, according to a court filing.
Emmanuel Priniotakis, a former principal on BDC's Sustainability Venture Fund, filed suit in Toronto in late April. He seeks more than $900,000 in damages, including 12 months' compensation and moral damages for reputational harm. The allegations have not been proven in court.
BDC Capital, Canada's largest venture capital firm, declined to comment on the specifics. "We believe it's best to let the legal process speak for itself," a spokesperson wrote in an email.
Priniotakis alleged he faced a hostile work environment after returning from medical leave in 2024. He said he reported bullying and dismissive conduct toward junior employees, inappropriate language, and investment governance issues. The court filing states he was asked to sign a confidentiality agreement before his complaints could be investigated. He refused.
One disputed decision involved BDC's sale of its stake in quantum computing company D-Wave in December 2024. Priniotakis said he and the deal team had advised against the sale. According to The Globe and Mail, BDC received between $24 million and $35 million USD. D-Wave's shares traded at $2.76 on Dec. 2 and later rose to $26.50 by May 2025.
Priniotakis also claimed that a partner threatened him with termination after he raised concerns about BDC giving misleading reasons for reversing an investment in Vancouver cleantech Portable Electric. He said his performance reviews were positive until he raised concerns, after which BDC issued a review that introduced new criticisms.
The claim says Priniotakis was advised by his doctor to go on disability leave in June 2025 due to workplace hostility. BDC's employee relations department allegedly refused to investigate without signing a confidentiality agreement, which he declined. He was fired with cause in December.
BDC Capital has not yet filed a defence.
