EPFO Moves UAN Activation to Umang App: Stepwise Guide

The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation shifted two services from its portal to the Umang app: UAN activation and generation of new UAN numbers. Both now require Aadhaar-based Face Authentication (FAT). The change follows a database consolidation and software upgrade EPFO said is meant to improve speed and reliability.

For FY26, the government ratified EPFO's recommendation of 8.25% interest on both EPF and Voluntary Provident Fund accounts. Interest credits were completed July 15, PTI reported. This is the third consecutive year the instrument delivered 8.25% returns.

How to Activate UAN on the Umang App

1. Download or update the Umang app from your app store.
2. Log in using your registered mobile number.
3. Select EPFO from the list of services.
4. Choose 'Activate UAN' under the Employee Services section.
5. Enter your UAN and Aadhaar number.
6. Complete Aadhaar-based Face Authentication. The app will prompt you to look into the camera.
7. Once verified, set your login password.
8. Your UAN is activated. You can log in to the EPFO member portal using the new password.

How to Generate a New UAN on the Umang App

1. Open the Umang app and log in.
2. Select EPFO, then 'Generate UAN' under Employee Services.
3. Enter your Aadhaar, PAN (if available), name, date of birth, and registered mobile number.
4. Complete Face Authentication.
5. The system will generate a new UAN. Note it down.
6. Share the new UAN with your employer so they can map it to your PF account.

How to Retrieve a Forgotten UAN

Via the Umang app:

1. Log in and select EPFO.
2. Choose 'Know Your UAN'.
3. Enter your PF member ID or Aadhaar/PAN.
4. The UAN will be displayed.

Your UAN is also printed on your salary slip. You can send an SMS: EPFOHO UAN to 7738299899 from your registered mobile.
