EPFO now auto-transfers PF when you switch jobs if your UAN is linked to Aadhaar. No separate transfer request needed. The change follows a platform migration.
Switching jobs no longer means wading through one of the most tedious provident fund formalities. The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has started automatically transferring provident fund balances when an employee joins a new company, provided the Universal Account Number (UAN) is linked to Aadhaar. The change eliminates the need for a separate transfer request.
The automatic transfer follows EPFO's migration to its new Centralised IT Enabled Services (CITES) platform, which the organisation says will make member services faster. Until now, members had to initiate a transfer request even after giving their UAN to the new employer and linking the new PF account with the existing UAN.
Previously, transferring PF accumulations from a previous employer to the current account involved several steps. Members submitted a transfer application through the EPFO portal or offline. The request then required processing through the employer and EPFO systems before the balance and service history could merge.
Under the new system, EPFO says Aadhaar-linked UAN-based accounts will transfer automatically when a member changes jobs. Employees will not have to file a separate online or offline transfer application solely to move their PF balance to the latest account.
The UAN is designed to remain the same throughout an employee's career, regardless of how many employers they have. By automatically linking successive PF accounts to the same UAN, EPFO aims to simplify account management and reduce paperwork.
Employees who change jobs frequently often accumulate multiple PF accounts. Merging these accounts helps maintain a continuous service record and consolidates retirement savings in one place. A consolidated service history can also make it easier to track the overall PF corpus and may simplify processing of eligible advances and final settlements.
Members can view their employment history through the EPFO Unified Member Portal by logging in with their UAN credentials and accessing the Service History section after OTP authentication.
The automatic PF transfer is one of several changes announced after EPFO's transition to the centralised platform. The organisation has also introduced faster processing of eligible claims, a centralised payment architecture, and the ability for members to access services from any EPFO office instead of being restricted to the office where their account was originally maintained.
